A study found people People who spend five hours a day on social media are three times more likely to get depression than people who spend less than two hours a day.
More than 1,000 young American adults participated in the study and tracked how many developed symptoms of depression in 6 months.

“Chicken or the egg first”
The large study published today in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine is the first study to link social media with depression.
Dr. Brian Primac, a professor of public health at the University of Arkansas and lead author, said: “Most research to date in this area has left the question of chicken or the egg.
“Other large studies have shown that depression and the use of social media tend to come together, but it’s hard to tell which one came first.
“This new study sheds light on these questions, because high early social media usage increases the incidence of depression.
“But the first depression did not change the use of social media.”
The research team asked survey participants how often they used social media and compared it to the scores of a wide range of quizzes that measure depression.
Of the 1,289 people in the final sample, 299 were already depressed at baseline and were tracked to see if this would affect their use of social media.
During the 6-month follow-up period, an additional 95 participants developed depressive symptoms.
Young adults who used social media for more than 5 hours a day were 2.8 times more likely to develop depression within 6 months than young adults who used less than 2 hours a day.
Researchers are confident in the links found, but this study can’t prove the cause and effect-social media is causing depression, not another factor.
Dr. Cesar Escobar-Viera, an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh, said: “One of the reasons for these findings may be that social media takes a lot of time.
“Excessive time on social media can replace the formation of more important face-to-face relationships, the achievement of personal or professional goals, or simply having valuable moments of remorse.”
How to reduce the use of social media
Jody Cook, a social media expert, said: “For most millennials, social media has emerged at the right time to grow. It was an exciting new way of communicating.
“The novelty began to wear out, creating more” take it or leave it “attitude. Moreover, much of the noise we hear about social media today is negative. Concerns about screen times being too long, links to mental health issues, online bullying, and reduced attention.
“This means it’s less attractive to those who haven’t used it yet.”
Here are some tips for reducing your use of social media:
- Get the clock: The number one reason people look at their cell phones is to check the time. This will take you to a notification and scroll around for a few minutes. This can be several hours each day.
- Set the cutoff time. In the evening, set a deadline for calls so that you don’t call from this time until the next day.
- Get the app: For example, use a time-limited app that tells you that you’ve spent 30 minutes on Instagram a day to keep track of your usage. Or just use the phone screen time monitor.
The authors suggest that comparisons may also underlie these findings, as social media feeds are often filled with the fascinating lives of celebrities.
Co-author Dr. Jaime Sidani, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, added: “Social media is often curated to emphasize positive depictions.
“This is an important part of life related to the development of identity and can be especially difficult for young adults who feel they cannot measure the impossible ideals they are exposed to.”
Losing battle
Studies show that the prevalence of depression has increased over the years.
According to the leading charity MIND, one in six people in the UK suffers from a common mental illness each week.
Dr. Primac fears that the Covid-19 pandemic will only see increased use and worsening mental health problems.
He states: “Now it’s hard to connect directly to society, so we’re all using more technologies like social media.
“I think these technologies are definitely worth it, but it’s also a good idea to think about which technology experiences really help and which technology experiences are emptying them.”
According to a previous study, the level of depression increased from 9% of adolescents born in the early 1990s to nearly 15% of adolescents born at the turn of the millennium.
