Waco Hospital Workers Receive First COVID-19 Vaccine Locally | Local News
Brookfielder, Ascension Providence’s nurse manager, became the first person to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at Waco on Thursday.
The work of vaccine scientists, multinational pharmaceutical companies, miners, public health leaders, US presidents, shipping pilots, drivers, tool makers, and healthcare professionals has been funded by billions of dollars by US taxpayers. And on Thursday a small shot in the arms of Brookfielder, a nurse manager at Ascension Providence.
Fielder first lined up at the Ascension Providence Medical Center on Thursday when employees received 975 doses of Pfizer vaccine earlier than initially expected. Waco’s Baylor Scott & White Hill Crest Medical Center expects an even distribution.
Fielder, a nurse manager at the Medical Surgery Unit, who has been with Ascension Providence for nearly six years, said he wasted time signing up for the first vaccination. She said she was shot to protect herself and show her safety to others.
“If I can do that, you can do that too,” Fielder said in an interview after her shot. “I hope this will bring the pandemic to an end so quickly.”
This week, the Texas Department of Health is sending the first shipment of Pfizer vaccine to a Texas hospital. It requires storage at very low temperatures and requires a second inoculation a few weeks later. Pfizer’s vaccine received emergency regulatory approval at the end of last week. Also, Moderna’s vaccine, which requires two doses but does not need to be kept cold, will soon receive similar approval. Three more vaccine candidates are in large-scale clinical trials in the United States.
