Geneva – The World Health Organization and partners said Tuesday that they are creating a global stockpile of Ebola vaccine to eradicate future outbreaks.
In a statement, WHO, Doctors Without Borders, UNICEF and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have established about 500,000 emergency reserves. Nearly 7,000 are currently available and more will be added throughout the year. Financial support for vaccine stockpiles was provided by the Vaccine Alliance GAVI.
The stockpiled Ebola vaccine is made by Merck. Prior to obtaining the license, this shot was used to contain outbreaks in Guinea and Congo under the “Compassionate Use” protocol.
Other stockpiles managed by WHO and partners exist for illnesses such as meningitis and yellow fever.
The Ebola vaccine will be stored in Switzerland and will be available for shipment after WHO and its partners have been requested by each country. Authorities have stated that the decision to release the vaccine will be made within 48 hours of such a request and the target delivery time will be within a week.
Vaccines are reserved for those at greatest risk of becoming infected with Ebola during an epidemic, including those who are affected or who are treating patients and their contacts.
