Breast Cancer Mortality Doesn’t Decrease in Young Women, Studies Find

Breast cancer mortality has increased slightly in women under the age of 40, reversing the long-standing trend of lower mortality, according to a study released on February 9. Radiology.

Researchers performed a retrospective analysis of breast cancer mortality using data from the National Center for Health Statistics and the National Cancer Institute’s monitoring, epidemiology and end-results programs. Mortality rates declined significantly between 1989 and 2010, but this trend stopped for women under the age of 40.

Since 2010, breast cancer mortality has continued to decline annually in women aged 40-79, but increased by 2.8% annually in women aged 20-29 and 0.3% annually in women aged 30-39. In addition, researchers observed that between 2009 and 2017, breast cancer mortality in women aged 70 to 79 years declined slowly compared to the previous year.

Studies have shown that the incidence of long-term breast cancer has increased by more than 4% annually among young women since 2000, which may have helped halt the decline in mortality in this age group.

“A possible cause of the recent striking differences in breast cancer mortality trends is the use of mammography,” the researchers said. “The known benefits of mammography screening that help reduce mortality in women at least 40 years old are rarely seen in women under 40 years of age.”

Similarly, the recommendations of the 2009 guidelines discouraged screening of older women. This may also be partly related to the slow decline in breast cancer mortality in women aged 70-79 years.
