The side effects of the COVID vaccine may reflect breast cancer-related symptoms, doctors say – CBS Philly
Philadelphia (CBS) — The surprising and newly discovered side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine have raised women’s concerns and are driving new guidelines on mammogram timing. According to doctors, women who have been vaccinated with the COVID vaccine can also develop symptoms related to breast cancer.
Women are currently advised to space the vaccine from the mammogram.
The COVID-19 vaccine can cause lymph node swelling, which is also a potential sign of breast cancer.
“Most women are worried because their lymph nodes are enlarged and their first thought is cancer,” said Dr. Andrea S. Porpilia.
Dr. Porpiglia of FoxChase says that swelling of the lymph nodes was felt in the armpits of both women and men and began to appear in the mammograms of recently vaccinated people.
“Is that a sign that the vaccine is working?” Asked Stephanie Staal of CBS3.
“Yes,” said Dr. Porpilia. “This is a normal immune response. When vaccinated, the body increases the number of cells that help fight the virus, which causes the lymph nodes to enlarge.”
Lymph node swelling occurs in 15% to 20% of people who receive the COVID-19 vaccine. It disappears naturally.

If the swelling is associated with cancer, additional imaging and biopsy are done.
To ensure that there is no confusion, the Breast Imaging Society states that the mammogram should be scheduled before or 6 weeks after receiving the COVID vaccine.
“The COVID vaccine does not increase the risk of breast cancer. This is the normal response seen by the vaccine,” said Dr. Porpilia.
A bigger concern is that people are afraid of being exposed to the virus, even though people skip or postpone regular cancer screenings and precautions are taken to avoid them.
“I’m worried we’re missing out on cancer because people are afraid to go to the doctor,” said Dr. Porpilia. “I feel that cancer and breast cancer will increase in the next few years.”
The recommendation from the American Cancer Society is that women take mammograms every year after the age of 45.
Doctors say women need to understand that vaccines and mammograms are safe to obtain.
