‘Meteor’ Found Over England Last Night With Hundreds of Reports of Seeing Fireballs in the Sky | UK News

Hundreds of meteors were reported across the UK last night, with some describing them as “bright turquoise” fireballs in the sky.

The UK Meteor Observation Network (UKMON) confirmed to Sky News that the meteor fireball occurred around 9:44 PM on May 16th.

The Amateur Astronomer Network confirmed that it had received more than 700 public reports of the event.

The UK Fireball Alliance also confirmed the reports on Twitter, adding that it had received nearly 100 reports, but the camera was unable to capture the sight.

Dr Ashley King of the UK Fireball Alliance said: “Last night at 21:44 BST, a bright fireball was observed and recorded extensively across the UK.

“It was moving from south to north through the Dorset/Somerset area and lasted about six seconds.

“This is most likely caused by the entry of rocks from the major asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter into Earth’s atmosphere, but we expect no meteorites on the ground because they ‘darked’ at an altitude of about 40 km.”

Sightings have also been reported in London, Birmingham, Cambridgeshire, West Berkshire and Bedfordshire.

A Twitter user posted a video captured by a doorbell camera.

Another user said, “I saw a green/white one in Manchester looking out to the southwest horizon.”

One person described it as “a bright turquoise, slowly falling and crumbling” and adding that it was “amazing.”

Astronomer and writer William Gater said the meteor was “another mass of meteors,” an unusually bright meteor.

What are meteors and why can we see them?

According to NASA, meteors enter Earth’s atmosphere as space rocks, also called meteoroids.

Meteors are formed when comets come close to the sun and break up with heat.

They can sometimes be seen as the Earth orbits the Sun and passes through the remnants of a collapsing comet.

As cosmic rocks fall towards Earth, they become very hot due to the attraction of the air, making them look like “meteorites.”

The bright beam is not the rock itself, but the burning hot air.

In general, meteoroids are very small, sometimes no larger than rocks, and they burn in the atmosphere.

A meteor shower occurs when several cosmic rocks enter Earth’s atmosphere at once.

This is the most recent of several meteor observations this year in England and Wales.

On May 12, hundreds of people said they saw a “bright green” fireball on social media.

It can be found in Southampton, London, Manchester, Birmingham, Devon and Somerset.

Tania de Sales Marques, astronomer at the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, said there are currently active meteors, which are related to Halley’s Comet, and will continue through May 28.
