UK, EU, Spain welcome 'significant progress' in Gibraltar talks | political news

Spain, the European Union and Britain said “substantial progress” had been made on Gibraltar's post-Brexit negotiations.

In a joint statement after the Brussels meeting, the two parties said they had agreed on a “general political line” on the territory's future status and that a final agreement could be reached within weeks.

Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron was among those taking part in talks on Gibraltar's relationship with the EU. This remains unresolved even after the UK officially left the EU in 2020.

The joint statement said: “Discussions took place in a constructive atmosphere and significant progress was made. A general political line was agreed, including: [the] Airports, goods and mobility.

“Negotiations to reach a UK-EU deal will continue over the coming weeks.

“Participants agreed that it was a productive day.”

The narrow peninsula, colloquially known as 'The Rock', has been a British territory since 1713, but its sovereignty has been disputed by Spain.

The question of how Gibraltar's border with Spain will be monitored long-term after Brexit has not been decided, and another sticking point is Madrid's desire to have greater control over the airport.

Sir Cameron's Spanish counterpart Jose Manuel Albares was among those attending Friday's meeting, along with European Commission Vice-President Maros Sefcovic and Gibraltar's Prime Minister Fabian Picardo. .

The joint statement continued. “This meeting reaffirmed our joint commitment to securing a UK-EU deal to secure the future prosperity of the entire region.
