Birmingham Airport temporarily suspended operations today due to an 'aircraft security incident'.

A Birmingham Airport spokesman previously said: “The aircraft landed safely and all passengers and crew have disembarked.”

“We ask that all guests planning to travel proceed to the airport and check in as usual.”

According to flight tracking website flightradar24, the Aer Lingus flight bound for Belfast took off at around 2:52pm and began turning mid-air at 3:06pm.

I arrived at Birmingham Airport around 3:24 PM.

Video from the scene showed several emergency vehicles on the runway as the plane landed.

A short time later, passengers and crew were seen leaving the aircraft in a single file as two more passengers and crew arrived to take them from the area.

An Aer Lingus spokesperson told Sky News: “We can confirm that the undeclared item discovered today on Emerald Airlines regional Aer Lingus flight EI3647 from Birmingham to Belfast was not a security risk.”

“Our teams are currently working to accommodate the affected passengers.”

West Midlands Police said specialist officers, including a canine unit, searched the plane and the incident was treated as a “false report with very good intentions”.

Police said the item was not suspicious.

The airport reopened around 6 p.m.

However, a number of flights scheduled to depart Birmingham this evening have been delayed or canceled, according to the airport's website.

It is unclear whether this delay was due to the incident or not.

Rail services were expected to be suspended until 7pm, with all routes between Birmingham New Street and Coventry blocked due to the airport incident.

National Rail said the line had now reopened but trains could still be canceled, delayed or diverted by up to 50 minutes.

Rail replacement buses also run between Coventry and Northampton.

Customers planning to travel to Birmingham Airport are advised to travel via Leamington Spa.
