Paolini dominates Andreescu in US Open thriller; Pegula wins

NEW YORK — No. 5 seed Jasmine Paolini and 2019 defending champion Bianca Andreescu played a thrilling match under the lights at Louis Armstrong Stadium on Day 2 of the U.S. Open, with the Italian once again prevailing 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4. Tuesday's first-round victory was Paolini's third over Andreescu this season, with all three meetings coming at the last three Grand Slam tournaments.

Paolini will face former world number one Karolina Pliskova in the second round. Pliskova qualified by beating Mayar Sherif 6-3, 0-6, 7-5.

No. 6 seed Jessica Pegula closed out the night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Shelby Rogers, who announced last week that the U.S. Open would be her final professional tournament.

Paolini’s physicality and mentality made the difference: On a day when two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka put on a performance at Louis Armstrong Stadium to remind everyone of her championship pedigree, the stars seemed aligned for a similar performance from Andreescu. Paolini kept her composure and focus to lead Andreescu into the first-set tiebreak. It wasn't enough to steal the set, but Paolini worked hard to remind herself that she was still in a position to win.

“It was tough after the first set,” Paolini told reporters after the match. “I was close to winning, but not close enough. I kept telling myself that I had to relax a little bit because I was a little nervous. I think my forehand wasn't working in the first set, but then I tried to push more, to be more relaxed.”

Paolini and Andreescu won't miss each other in the draws: Paolini and Andreescu battled for 2 hours and 48 minutes, and in the end, it was Andreescu's body that cracked first. She began to feel cramps in her lower legs early in the third set, but fought bravely through the pain to keep the pressure on Paolini, who had broken her serve early in the match and looked set to run away with the set.

“I think she played a really good match today,” Paolini said. “We both had a fight for almost three hours. I tried to do my best to try to hit the ball, push every ball to try to make it move because I think she was struggling a little bit physically. But me too at some point.

“It was a very good battle.”

Having been knocked out by Paolini at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and now the US Open, Andreescu could only laugh as she met the affable Italian at the net for their handshake.

“She told me I was playing well and she hoped to win next time,” Paolini said with a laugh. “I told her I hoped not. It's tough every time to play against her, I have to say.”

Pegula and Rogers come full circle: After a stellar summer that saw her win Toronto and reach the final in Cincinnati, Pegula had the unenviable task of playing her good friend in Rogers' final tournament.

“We grew up playing together in juniors, playing in the same sections together,” an emotional Pegula said on the field. “And now we’re playing at Arthur Ashe Stadium.”

Rogers looked set to spring the upset after breaking Pegula to lead 3-2 in the first set. But after adjusting to the humid and slow conditions of the night on Ashe, Pegula dropped just four games the rest of the way.

Pegula will face Sofia Kenin in the second round. Kenin beat 2021 champion Emma Raducanu in three sets earlier in the evening to advance.
