Biden authorizes Ukraine to fire long-range US missiles into Russia

US President Joe Biden has authorized Ukraine to use long-range US missiles against military targets in Russia, a US official told AFP on condition of anonymity, confirming media reports.

The New York Times and Washington Post, citing unnamed sources, said Ukraine's long-demanded major policy change was a response to North Korea's deployment of troops to help Moscow's war effort.

The American official interviewed by AFP confirmed the accuracy of this information.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has consistently asked Washington for permission to use the military's powerful tactical missile system, known by its initials as ATACMS, to strike targets in Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that such a green light would mean NATO was at war with Russia, a threat he had previously made when Ukraine's supporters stepped up military assistance to kyiv.

The shift in stance from the outgoing Biden administration was triggered by the arrival of North Korean troops in Russia, with Western intelligence reports suggesting around 10,000 troops are being deployed, according to newspapers .

U.S. officials previously said they believed the ATACMS missiles would make only a limited difference to the Ukrainian campaign and also wanted to ensure Washington's munitions stockpiles were not depleted.

The American change of course is likely to have broader repercussions and lead European allies to review their positions.

The United States and Britain have supplied Ukraine with long-range ATACMS and Storm Shadow missiles, respectively.

Germany has refused to supply Ukraine with its Taurus missiles with a range of more than 500 kilometers (310 miles), fearing they could hit Russian territory.

Biden's decision comes as he prepares to hand over power to President-elect Donald Trump, who has promised to end the conflict in a negotiation that is expected to force Ukraine to cede territory.
