(News) — Search and rescue efforts continue after an apartment tower partially collapsed overnight in Surfside, Florida, just north of Miami Beach. Sources told CBS Miami that at least one person has died, while ABC11 reports that at least eight have been hospitalized with injuries, and one person is said to be in critical condition. In The Miami Herald, part of the Champlain Towers’ 12-storey south beach-facing apartment on Collins Avenue collapsed at about 2 a.m. Thursday. The paper reports that about half of the tower appears to have been affected. “She said she heard a big explosion. It felt like an earthquake,” says a man whose wife was staying in the apartment during the night.
More than 80 units responded to the scene to help conduct the rescue effort, with several fire departments joining the county’s technical rescue team, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reported for NBC 6. The Washington Post reports that firefighters can be seen They use stairs to bring people out sections of the apartment that haven’t collapsed. CBS reports that a boy of about 10 has been rescued, and NBC 6 has a video of a child (probably the same boy) being pulled alive from under the rubble. A witness said the scene looked like a bomb had exploded, noting that the apartment, which was built in 1981, had more than 130 units. Insider notes that the apartment tower is about a block from where Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump rent a home. It has not yet been said what might have caused the collapse.
