Portland, Oregon (KPTV)-A new study shows that drug addicts may be at increased risk of a breakthrough COVID-19 infection.
The study, published earlier this week by World Psychiatry, included more than 500,000 vaccinated individuals.
We found that people with marijuana addiction are at greatest risk of developing a breakthrough COVID-19 infection and are more likely to be aggravated by the virus.
Researchers examined electronic health records as part of their research.
The study found that people with marijuana use disorders were more than twice as likely to develop a breakthrough COVID infection as people without drug addiction.
People with cocaine addiction and tobacco use disorders have also been found to be at greater risk.
People with substance abuse disorders were more likely to be hospitalized during recovery from their illness and more likely to die of COVID-19.

Studies show that people suffering from drug addiction may be more susceptible to breakthrough infections because they are more likely to be exposed to a weakened immune system, poor overall health, and COVID-19.
However, researchers also pointed out in the study that people with substance abuse disorders tend to be older than those without problems with substance abuse.
