An earthquake-damaged structure was found in the Piri region of southeastern Turkey

In the ongoing excavations of the ancient city of Berry in the southeastern province of Adiyaman, one of the five largest cities in the Commagene kingdom, a structure destroyed in an earthquake was discovered.

The damaged structure was found in an area of ​​270 square meters (2,900 square feet) on the side of an ancient city cemetery in Adiyaman Province, and the earthquake is estimated to have occurred in the 6th or 7th century AD.

Mehmet Alkan, director of the Adiyaman Museum, told reporters on Tuesday that new discoveries dating back to the sixth and seventh centuries CE have been made in the ancient city, adding that “the wall structures built using irregular stones and clay mortars were found in an area of ​​approximately 270 square metres. .which we opened in the western part of the rocky region.”

During the excavations that began in 2001 and continued intermittently, a historic Roman fountain, large filled stones, aqueducts and various architectural structures were discovered in 2021.

Roof tiles were discovered during excavations, according to archaeologist Yildiz Ersunmez.

Noting that the recently found structure was destroyed in a possible earthquake, Ersonmes said, “There is a collapse here, which shows us the possibility of an earthquake. We think this structure was a place to live.”
