Cologne / Port-au-Prince. A 5.3-magnitude earthquake, Monday morning local time, struck southwest Haiti. The earthquake occurred near the town of Les Cayes in the province of Neipes, about 200 kilometers from the capital, Port-au-Prince. Just last August, an earthquake in this region killed more than 2,000 people. The Malteser International team in Haiti is providing the first emergency assistance to people in the region.

“People in Nieps are in shock. In the past months, they have been busy rebuilding what was destroyed by the earthquake last August, and now the next earthquake is already happening. Our colleagues are on the ground to provide psychosocial support to traumatized people,” says Jelena Kaifenheim, Regional Director for America Latin and the Caribbean at Malteser International: “As many people are infected, we will also be supplying medicines and medical supplies to hospitals.”

According to current information, two people were killed in the earthquake on Monday. Homes were damaged and many people were injured.
