Scientists at the National Cancer Institute of the United States compared the incidence of diseases affecting 2.1 million women worldwide each year with satellite images taken in 1996.

They saw the case of breast cancer Women over the age of 16 considered other controlling factors.

Past studies have suggested various theories as to why exposure to streetlights can increase a woman’s risk of illness.

One study conducted by Harvard Medical School experts found that artificial light can disrupt a woman’s circadian rhythm (the body’s internal clock), disrupting natural biological processes. It was.

Light has also been found to block protective hormones that help prevent disease.

At that time, Professor Peter James said: “In modern industrialized society, artificial lighting is everywhere.

“Our results suggest that this widespread exposure to nighttime external light may represent a new risk factor for breast cancer.”

of Harvard study For 15 years, it has tracked almost 110,000 people across the United States.

The top ⅕ of ambient light exposure is 14% more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than the bottom ⅕.

Professor James says light is thought to reduce the body’s production of melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that predicts the onset of darkness and helps sleep.

In the lab, melatonin has been shown to slow tumor growth.

The association was only seen in premenopausal women who are current or former smokers.

A new study published in the International Journal of Cancer follows 186,981 women who have undergone menopause.

People exposed to the highest levels of exposure to outdoor light at night were 10% more likely to develop breast cancer during follow-up.

Dr Lena Jones, who participated in the new study, said their findings would add to the body of evidence.

“A few studies investigating this question have often relied on subjective exposure data, resulting in inconsistent results,” she said.

“We used an objective exposure measurement-estimated outdoor light at night from satellite data.

“For future studies, it is important to accurately measure light at an individual’s night exposure using a combination of objective measurements, carefully designed questionnaires, and personal measurement devices.”

Breast cancer is the most common form of illness in women, affecting one in seven British women in their lives.

It is more common in older women, with approximately 54,500 women and 360 men diagnosed in the UK each year. This is about 150 cases per day.

The risk to an ill person can be affected by age, family history, and lifestyle factors such as obesity and smoking.
