Small earthquake strikes northern Israel

Residents of northern Israel felt a small earthquake Sunday morning, the latest in a series of earthquakes to hit the region over the past few months.

The earthquake measured 3.7 on the Richter scale, and its epicenter was 96 km northwest of Nahariya.

According to the Army’s Home Front Command, the early warning system was not activated because the earthquake did not pose a danger.

The unusual number of earthquakes recently felt in parts of the country has led some residents to believe a larger earthquake is on the way, as the Home Front Command conducted a major national earthquake drill earlier this year.

In January, an earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale hit the western coast of Cyprus and was felt by residents of neighboring Israel, Lebanon and Turkey.

Less than two weeks later, two small earthquakes shook northern Israel within hours, causing the evacuation of a school in Afula and the Beit She’an City Council.

In early February, another earthquake was felt off the coast of Cyprus by Israel, in what the Cyprus Geological Survey said was a follow-up to a major earthquake that occurred off the eastern Mediterranean island the previous month.

Later in February, residents of northern Israel felt two small earthquakes within several hours.

The Geological Survey of the Israeli Seismological Department said that the first was recorded with a magnitude of 3.5 at the epicenter of the earthquake, northeast of Beit She’an, in the northern Jordanian border town of Shuna. The second earthquake measured 3.2 on the Richter scale and had a similar epicenter.

No injuries were reported in any of the quakes, although cracks in some buildings led to evacuations.

Israel is located along the Syrian-African Fault, an active fault line that runs along the border between Israel and Jordan. Major earthquakes in the region occur on average once every 80 years, although the most recent occurred more than a century ago.

Geological experts recently warned that about a million homes in Israel are at risk of collapsing in the event of an earthquake.

According to estimates, a major earthquake could kill about 7,000 people, injure 145,000 people, leave 170,000 people home and destroy 320,000 buildings.
