Earthquake is ‘the last thing’ Afghanistan needs
Speaking to Al-Jazeera, Obaidullah Bahir, founder of Save Afghanistan from Hunger, said that the devastating earthquake that struck Afghanistan would make the already dire humanitarian situation in the country worse.
“The situation is horrific. This is the last thing Afghanistan needs. They were already facing one of the worst humanitarian crises in modern history and now this,” Bahir told Al Jazeera.
This is perhaps one of the worst earthquakes in Afghanistan in recent years. The problem is that a lot of these regions, and Afghanistan in general, are on the fault line. He added that most of the areas hit by the earthquake are mountainous areas, and people live on the sides of mountains or in valleys, which makes them particularly vulnerable to landslides that come as a result of earthquakes.

Taliban demands international help as Western sanctions continue
A rescue operation could be a major test for the Taliban, which seized the country in August and has been cut off from much international aid due to sanctions.
Even before the Taliban seized power, emergency response teams in Afghanistan were exhausted as they dealt with the natural disasters that frequently hit the country.
“The government is operating within its capabilities,” said Anas Haqqani, a senior Taliban official.
“We hope the international community and aid agencies will also help our people in this difficult situation,” he wrote on Twitter.
