Up to 30 monkeypox cases in Alabama as US total exceeds 11,000
The number of monkeypox cases in Alabama continued to rise last week, reaching 30 on Sunday, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to the map, the number of infected people nationwide reached 11,177.
Health officials in Alabama announced the first two cases almost a month ago, on July 16, in Mobile and Birmingham.
A more recent update did not include information about where cases were detected in Alabama.
According to the Alabama Department of Public Health, the state was to receive 4,871 doses of the Jynneos vaccine to be administered to those at highest risk of contracting the virus.
People exposed to monkeypox can benefit from the vaccine if they receive their first dose within 14 days of exposure.
Anyone can get monkeypox, but in the current outbreak, men who have sex with men are most at risk.
Past outbreaks have been spread by rodents. The virus is most easily spread through prolonged skin-to-skin contact and direct exposure to lesions.
Cases are rising across the United States, but states are not evenly affected by the virus.
In the South, Georgia and Florida had the most cases, with 851 and 1,085 respectively. In Texas, too, he has over 800 cases.
Nationally, New York and California have the highest number of cases at 2,295 and 1,945. Only Wyoming has not reported any cases.
People with monkeypox may experience fever and chills.
The virus can also cause blistering rashes around the genitals, hands, and mouth, according to the CDC.
Most people will have symptoms for 2 to 4 weeks, and the disease may spread until the rash is completely healed.
The vaccine used against monkeypox was developed to fight smallpox but is effective against both viruses.
