New York Health Officials: Polio Found in Sullivan County Wastewater Samples
Albany, New York — New York state health officials warn of growing “community spread” of the disease. polio After the virus was found in a wastewater sample from another county in the northern part of the state.
The state health department announced Friday that poliovirus was detected in four samples. Sullivan County, twice each in July and August. State Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett said, “There are already too many New Yorkers paralyzed by polio,” and urged again to make sure residents are vaccinated.
“Today’s polio in New York is an imminent threat to all adults and children who have not been vaccinated or who have not been vaccinated against polio,” Bassett said in a prepared release.
The virus has now been identified in wastewater samples from three neighboring counties north of New York City (Rockland, Orange, and Sullivan). Poliovirus has also been found in New York City sewage.
