Egypt and Turkey to resume diplomatic relations in coming months: Turkish FM
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Monday that Turkey and Egypt could resume full diplomatic relations and reappoint ambassadors “in the coming months”.
Cavusoglu told reporters in Ankara that the two countries may resume diplomatic consultations by deputy foreign ministers “soon” as part of the normalization process.
After years of strained relations, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi shook hands with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the opening ceremony of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar last week in what several media described as a new start in bilateral relations.
Turkish and Egyptian intelligence officials spoke after a meeting between al-Sisi and Erdogan in Doha, Qatar, Turkish sources told Reuters on Monday.
Turkish President Erdogan said on Sunday that the process of strengthening ties with Egypt will begin with a meeting of ministers from the two countries and the talks will evolve accordingly.
In a televised talk show recorded in Konya province on Saturday, Erdogan said he spoke with Al-Sisi for 30-45 minutes during the meeting on the sidelines of the World Cup in Qatar.
“We focused on the talks with President Al-Sisi and said now we are exchanging visits from low-level ministers. Then let’s broaden the scope of these talks,” he said, also hinting at the possibility of improving relations with Syria.
“Things can return to normal with Syria in the next stage, as happened with Egypt,” he said.
The two countries began consultations between senior Foreign Ministry officials last year as part of Turkish efforts to ease tensions with Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Israel and Saudi Arabia.
Egyptian presidential official spokesman Bassam Radi said that during their recent meeting in Qatar, Al-Sisi and Erdogan underscored the depth of historical ties between the two states and peoples.
“It was agreed that this will be the start of the development of bilateral relations between the two sides,” he said in a previous statement.
