Homeless man allegedly bit off LAPD sergeant’s finger in East Hollywood

ANGELS – Officials said a Angels the police sergeant is without part of his little finger after he was bitten by an ailing man roaming.

THE Los Angeles Police Department the sergeant was patrolling Metro Red Line at Santa Monica Boulevard and Vermont Avenue at East Hollywood Thursday around 10:15 a.m., when a man on board the train allegedly had drug paraphernalia on him. LAPD officers approached the man, later identified as 36-year-old Ephraim Okorie, and escorted him off the train.

They quickly escorted Okorie off the train, and that’s when police say he became violent and tried to fight off LAPD officers at the scene. Shortly after, authorities said Okorie bit the sergeant.

The LAPD sergeant was taken to hospital after having his little finger bitten off. The sergeant worked overtime when patrolling public transit.

The tip of his little finger was recovered by paramedics but apparently doctors were unable to reattach it.

Okorie was arrested and faces multiple charges, including assaulting a peace officer.

Depending on which section of the subway line you are on, trains are guarded by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies, LAPD officers, or private security guards. FOX 11 guards have spoken to say the incident is concerning but unfortunately it’s just another day on the train.

The problem of homelessness in the region is not limited to violent behavior only. A security guard working under contract at the Metro Red Line has shared videos of a homeless man defecating on the platform. Another video shared by the same employee showed a man bleeding from a stab wound.

“People fighting. Knife attacks,” said Kenyon Dove, a security contractor FOX 11 spoke to. “It’s almost everyday here, especially with drug use and homelessness.”
