11:04 a.m. Update February 9: A magnitude 6.3 earthquake was initially reported, but the magnitude of the earthquake that struck Hawaii Island this morning has been downgraded to a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale.

The quake occurred near Pahala, Kau at 10:07 a.m., at a depth of 23 miles below sea level. After the earthquake occurred, it was confirmed that there was no threat of a tsunami in the area.

According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the quake had no apparent impact on Mauna Loa or Kilauea volcanoes. Several aftershocks were felt by residents and are expected to continue.

There were no reports of major damage, but Punalu'u Bake Shop posted photos of the quake's aftermath, showing products in the store scattered on the ground. Employees evacuated customers at the time of the accident and no injuries were reported.

This earthquake is likely related to flexure of the lithosphere caused by the weight of the Hawaiian Islands on the oceanic lithosphere. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, Earth's tectonic plates consist of the lithosphere, a mostly solid layer extending from the crust to the upper mantle.

When the Hawaiian Islands stand on top of the Pacific Plate, their enormous weight bends or bends the lithosphere.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to monitor volcanoes in Hawaii for any changes.

At present, known damage consists primarily of minor landslides, resulting in debris on various roads. The Hawaii County Department of Public Works and state highway crews responded to clear the areas.

So far, there have been no reports of serious damage.
