The term Hot Rodent Man became a hot topic in May when The Hollywood Reporter released its controversial new list of stars for 2024. The term was used to describe the attractiveness of a group of male celebrities while also sparking widespread debate. Online commentators drew comparisons to memes from the 2007 Pixar animated film Ratatouille to suggest that a new set were being considered Hollywood’s latest sex symbols because of (or perhaps in spite of) their rodent-like features. This month, the conversation had reached a fever pitch, with publications delving into the question: Who is a rodent man?

In the Indian entertainment industry, celebrities like Rajkumar Rao, Kartik Aaryan, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Babil Khan and even Ibrahim Ali Khan can all be considered stars. The archetype of male beauty was embodied by heroes with a square, rugged jaw, chiseled features and a commanding presence, setting the standard for masculinity. However, the definition of beauty has become more inclusive. The trend heralds angular features, wider noses and often unkempt hair, reflecting a wider cultural acceptance of eclectic beauty standards.

Raamz, a fashion expert and now a leading actor, tells us, “This shift is also reflected in men’s fashion and hairstyling, where there is a growing adoption of natural and less groomed styles. The rodent aesthetic resonates with audiences because of its authenticity and relatability, offering a more complex appeal that goes beyond mere physical impression. Cultural factors, such as the increased emphasis on individuality and inclusivity, are driving this celebration of unconventional beauty. Actors like Babil Khan, Ibrahim Ali Khan, Kartik Aaryan, Timothe Chalamet and Adam Driver intrigue us with their unique features and the emotional depth they bring to their roles.”

The curious call

Distinctive features have that quality that suggests depth of character and an unusual outlook on life, a beauty that arouses curiosity and admiration. Magnetism, rooted in confidence and the ability to stand out, leaves a lasting impression. It’s about feeling good about yourself and expressing your style through well-fitting, quality fabrics that enhance natural features. Clean lines and tailored cuts that offer both style and comfort are key in this regard, notes Nimit Singhi, founder of Live Linen, who also adds, “Men are opting for grooming styles that enhance their natural features, whether it’s a neatly trimmed beard or tousled hair. This focus on confidence and individuality aligns with the broader movement towards self-expression.”

Personality before perfection

Is the “hot rodent” or “short king” trend simply an extension of male privilege in the entertainment industry, where men have always had more latitude to be considered attractive? It’s true, but brands are creating collections that cater to these actors’ body types and style preferences, says fashion designer Moin Kazi, adding: “Angled features and a particular look allow actors to portray a wider range of characters and relationships that resonate with audiences who identify with these diverse looks. There’s a shift toward more tailored but relaxed fits, vintage-inspired clothing, and statement pieces that emphasize personality over perfection.”

Offbeat faces

Independent creative director Shiv Khandelvwal says the review opens up new opportunities for actors who might not have been considered for certain roles. Casting directors for films and OTT platforms aim to keep viewers engaged, recognising that atypical faces can inspire the creation of new, tailor-made roles. As audience preferences evolve, casting choices should become more diverse, accommodating a wider range of looks and talent. This ensures that the storytelling remains dynamic and relevant to contemporary audiences.
