Church Responds to Japan Earthquake with Donations, Services
Six months after a devastating earthquake struck Japan's Noto Peninsula on January 1, 2024, many damaged shrines and temples are now being repaired.
To help preserve historical heritage, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has donated funds to help demolish and repair sacred shrines and temples.

Assistance with the costs of demolition and repair of collapsed buildings
Because of safety concerns about secondary disasters in hazardous locations, such as tilting buildings, demolition and repair contractors are used instead of volunteers. The church helps with the costs of demolition and repair of such buildings.
By the end of June 2024, two shrines had received financial support: Mishima Kintohira Shrine (Mishima City) and Nishinomiya Shrine (Tomioka City).
Four Buddhist temples are also supported: Nichiren Buddhist Temple, Kuunzan Chujoji Temple (Kojima City), Jodo Shinshu Otani Shoganji Temple (Noto Island), and Jodo Shinshu Honganji Temple Phoenix Mountain Kokenji Sect (Noto Island).
The Kokenji Temple of the Phoenix Mountain Sect would be the next sacred building to receive assistance.
Financial support was provided for the repair of the roof of the main hall of Kokenji Temple and the reconstruction of Shoganji Temple.
Mishima Kintohira Shrine was on the verge of collapse due to the earthquake. The shrine was known for its massive roofs on the left and right sides of the main shrine, and was a source of faith and vitality for many residents.
Although the severely damaged shrine needed to be demolished, many documents and materials of historical value were saved and are local treasures of Nanao City and Mishima Town Council. Mishima residents wanted to rebuild, but the cost of demolition was an obstacle. The church provided financial assistance to help with the demolition costs.
Supporting debris removal through Helping Hands
On June 15, a large-scale Helping Hands activity was held at Jodo Soseninji Temple (Kojima Town) for Kanazawa and Kanagawa Associations (a group of communities) to remove debris.
The historical significance of Sainenji Temple is deeply rooted in the hearts of the people of Japan. This temple is one of 29 temples built by Maeda Toshiie, the first ruler of Kaga Province. It is one of 16 temples that remain today. (These include Chōjōji Temple.)
The roof of the temple collapsed due to the earthquake. Because the interior of the temple is exposed to the elements, there were concerns about mold growth, which worsened when the rainy season began. Because access to the site was difficult for vehicles, it took many volunteers to manually remove the huge amounts of waste.
During the service project held on June 15, 2024, more than nine truckloads of debris were removed. The work was meticulously done to salvage and preserve the ceiling tiles and other historical artifacts for future generations. The church donated a truck to assist in the cleanup efforts.
In Saenji, Helping Hands volunteers from Kanazawa Stake participated in the debris clearance held on June 29. Helping Hands joined the volunteer group Sweat Together and volunteer groups of Buddhist Jodo who came from Tokyo and joined the relief efforts.
“This group seemed to care about the poor, and they were talking about each other's charitable activities while working on their charitable activities,” said Mitsuru Takase, who participated in the event.
Many volunteers from different faiths and communities worked together in a friendly and respectful atmosphere.
Many shrines and temples, including the Seninji Temple, are still in a very difficult situation, requiring urgent emergency response and support. It will take some time for professional contractors to complete the reconstruction with the help of volunteers and financial assistance from organizations such as the Church of Jesus Christ.
