6.9 magnitude earthquake hits Tonga – Kaniva Tonga News

Updated: A 6.9 magnitude earthquake has struck Tonga, with residents of Tongatapu, where the Pacific Forum leaders' meeting is being held, reporting feeling the quake.

No tsunami threat has been reported after the earthquake struck the country at around 12.40pm Tongan time.

The Tongan Meteorological Service said the quake struck 20 kilometres south of Oiha Island, Ha'apai, at a depth of 124 kilometres.

No damage was reported.

Reports on social media said the tremor was “very sharp” and lasted for a long time.

There was concern that tsunami sirens were not activated. This concern arose from the comparison between today's 6.9 magnitude quake and the 6.7 magnitude quake in May, which triggered a tsunami warning after tsunami sirens sounded all over Tongatapu.

The Meteorological Authority said that “the above value is provisional and may increase or decrease as more seismic data becomes available.”

The news comes after a 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck large parts of the Australian state of New South Wales.

Thousands of people reported feeling the quake in an area stretching hundreds of kilometres from south of Sydney to the mid-north coast of New South Wales.

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck the town of Denman, about three hours north of Sydney in the Upper Hunter region, at 12.02pm on Friday (local time).

More than 2,000 people reported feeling the tremors in the next hour, including many residents more than 200 kilometres away in Sydney.
