H5N1 avian flu suspected in California cattle
Three dairy cows in the state are suspected of being infected with H5N1 avian influenza, the California Department of Food and Agriculture announced Thursday.
in News release, Officials said they were investigating the possibility that highly pathogenic avian influenza may have been introduced at three dairy farms in the Central Valley, though the presence of the virus has not yet been confirmed.
If tests confirm the presence of the virus, health officials said, “it is important to note that pasteurization is completely effective in inactivating the virus and there is no concern for the safety of milk or dairy products for consumers.”
The virus has been detected in 193 herds in 13 states, and if confirmed, that number will rise to 196 herds in 14 states.
Department officials said they have been closely monitoring the situation since the first cases were reported in March and are working with private veterinarians, farmers and ranchers and local, state and federal agencies “to develop response plans and actively monitor the disease in livestock and poultry across California.”
If an outbreak is confirmed, officials will work with state public health departments and local agriculture and public health departments to “support animal health and public health efforts with the goal of understanding the spread of the outbreak and limiting exposure to the virus until affected livestock have developed immunity.”
No details about the herd's location were released other than that it is in the Central Valley, which covers 18,000 square miles, or about 11 percent of California's land area.
No details are available on whether the milk is available in retail stores.
“This is really sad news, but not surprising,” said Rick Bright, a virologist and former director of the U.S. Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. He said the H5N1 virus “is well established in dairy cows across the United States, and the recent lull in reports likely reflects a lull in testing.”
He said little was being done to control the virus or to provide adequate protection for “people who work closely with infected animals”.
“There will be an increased risk of avian and human influenza viruses mixing as we move into the autumn and winter,” he said, adding that he was concerned “that it will be important to have rigorous surveillance and testing programs in animals and humans in place before the influenza season arrives.”

California is the largest dairy producing state in the U.S. With approximately 1,300 dairy farms and 1.69 million dairy cows, California produces approximately 20% of the nation's milk.
