Coastal nurses vaccinated with COVID-19 refuse to live in fear
Pascagoula, Mississippi (AP) — The Singing River Health System received its first Pfizer vaccine on the Mississippi coast on Tuesday afternoon, with 975 doses arriving in Pascagoula.
One of those shots was named after Lacy Lancaster.
She has been working as a registered nurse for critical care for 13 years. For the past nine months, Lancaster has been caring for COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit. The virus has infected some of her colleagues and one has died, but Lancaster has so far avoided COVID-19.
She is looking forward to being vaccinated, she told San Herald on Tuesday morning.
“I’m ready for it,” said 40-year-old Lancaster. “I’m not afraid to take shots. I want to get one. I think everyone should get it.”
“I’m sure it gives us an extra layer of protection.”
Frontline healthcare professionals like Lacy are the first to line up nationwide for shots. And it is also quickly distributed in nursing homes and other long-term care environments. The vaccine will be generally available in spring or early summer, said state health officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs.
Approval of the second vaccine from Moderna is expected on Friday. Both vaccines have proven to be approximately 95% effective in clinical trials.
Nurses protect themselves on the COVIDICU floor
Sarah Duffey, director of media relations at Singing River, said the healthcare system was waiting for the Moderna vaccine, but wanted to protect workers sooner and called for a Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine on Tuesday.
All three Singing River Hospitals in Ocean Springs, Pascagoula and Gulfport have sub-zero freezers that can store up to 5,000 total doses of Pfizer vaccine. The healthcare system inoculates healthcare workers from all three locations.
Lancaster, the mother of two 40-year-olds, says she is careful to take all precautions before heading to the COVID-19 ICU floor, which works at night and on weekends.
“When I go to work, I know how to protect myself,” she said. “Yes, I’m scared to have it, but I don’t have that idea. I have work to do.”
Lancaster’s concern is for her patient. In October, when she lost two patients within an hour, Lacy created a heartbreaking Facebook post using her photo on the ICU floor. She wrote partially:

Lacy wants people to wear masks and protect their loved ones by keeping them at a social distance. She said COVID-19 changed everything on her ICU floor.
“More patients than ever have become ill and the unit is equipped with a large number of ventilators,” she said. Family members are often unable to visit their loved ones in the ICU, even through the glass of the hospital room door. In many cases, family members are also infected with COVID-19 and are being quarantined.
As is often reported, visits are made by phone and FaceTime. She and other healthcare professionals lose all sorts of personal contact because they are covered with protective equipment when they see the patient.
Still, Lancaster grows closer to the patient and his family. She thinks of them and prays for them long after the shift is over.
