A new program by Vitalant (formerly United Blood Services) collects blood donations from recovered COVID-19 patients to help those with critical illness.

On Saturday, Jennifer Martinez of FOX 10 spoke with the first person to donate in Arizona.

Jack Schmidtlin says it was his way of giving back.

“After testing negatives and proposing to me the idea that this is providing plasma at an early stage, they can potentially help people because they don’t currently have a vaccine,” Schmitrain said. Said.

It’s been more than three weeks since Schmitlein recovered from COVID-19.

Schmitlein fell ill during his study abroad in Barcelona, ​​Catalonia, Spain. Now, the 21-year-old old man has decided to become one of the first people in the valley to donate convalescent plasma to vitalants.

“This is an improved FDA treatment and one of the first tools available to help some of the sick in COVID-19 patients,” said Sue Shu of Vitalant. .

Under the program, patients who recover and are asymptomatic for 14 days after a negative test can donate.

“By donating plasma from patients who have recovered from coronavirus to patients, it is believed that these antibodies can help patients easily fight disease,” Thew said.

Also, those who are already infected with the coronavirus and who have recovered have said they are more likely to have developed antibodies that help others help the coronavirus. By giving convalescent plasma, donors can provide potentially life-threatening antibodies to some patients.

The program is still in its infancy, but for Schmidtlin he says he was one of the lucky guys with mild symptoms. Schmitlein said his head was cold, his cough was dry, his chest was tight, and his taste was diminished.

Schmittlin says donating convalescent plasma was the bare minimum.

“I felt this was a great way to give back. It was terrible, because some people died and loved ones couldn’t see other loved ones in the hospital,” Schmitlein said. “If this can help at least one person, I made a difference for one person, maybe they can live, so it’s a potentially nationwide ripple effect I think.”
