Russia produces the first batch of Covid-19 vaccines for animals as fur farms are lining up for purchase
Russia has produced the world’s first batch (17,000 doses) of COVID-19 vaccine for animals, its agricultural regulator said Friday. Russia registered Carnivac-Cov in March after tests showed that dogs, cats, foxes and minks produce antibodies against COVID-19. Regulator Rosselkhoznadzor said in a statement that the first batch would be supplied to several parts of Russia. Companies in Germany, Greece, Poland, Austria, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, Lebanon, Iran and Argentina have expressed interest in purchasing vaccines.
The World Health Organization has expressed concern about the risk of transmitting the virus between humans and animals. Russian regulators say vaccines can protect vulnerable species and block mutations in the virus.
“Approximately 20 organizations are ready to negotiate the registration and supply of vaccines in their own country. Registration files abroad, especially in the European Union, are in preparation and will be used immediately in the registration process.” Said.
Denmark killed all 17 million minks on the farm last year after concluding that the strain of the virus had moved from humans to mink and that mutant strains of the virus had emerged among people.
Rosselkhoznadzor said Russian fur farms are planning to buy vaccines with companies in Greece, Poland and Austria. According to major trade associations, the Russian fur industry accounts for about 3% of the world market, down from 30% in the Soviet era.
Alexander Gintsburg, director of the institute that developed the Russian Sputnik V human vaccine, was reported in the Izvestia newspaper that COVID-19 is likely to attack animals next.
“The next step in the epidemic is livestock and livestock coronavirus infections,” said Gintsburg.
Some scientists say that cats and dogs do not play a major role in infecting humans with the coronavirus, and when infected with COVID-19, their own symptoms are often mild.
Watchdog said the animals had been showing an immune response for at least 6 months since the study began in October. He said he would continue to study the effects of vaccines on animals.
Russia already has three coronavirus vaccines for humans, the most well-known of which is Sputnik V. Moscow has also given urgent approval to the other two, EpiVacCorona and CoviVac.
