Although she is now the face of a lovable supervillain, it was playing a real ice skater that Margot Robbie embarked on the most authentic fight of her acting career. And while that particular “Me, Tonya” streak was her favorite movie, it probably didn’t make it into the movie for the best.
As shown in “Me, Tonya”, Tonya Harding (Robbie) had a volatile relationship with her husband, Jeff Gillooly (Sebastian Stan). Harding and Gillooly’s accounts differ as to what exactly happened between them. As Vulture reportsWriter Steven Rogers said the film is based on Harding’s story but Gillooly claimed he never hit her. The film addresses these disparities head-on, literally, when Tonya speaks to the camera during a violent edit.
Although Robbie, both a producer and a star, had mixed feelings about the appearance of the domestic violence scenes to audiences, she got deeply involved emotionally during their filming. In one, she and Stan, like she said, “got into a fight.” Robbie said Stan slammed his hand in a door, hit him on the head and rushed to the hospital forgetting they were on a tray.
The fight was so brutal that the scene was finally cut. But Robbie said: “It ended up being my favorite scene because I forgot I was playing, and nothing makes me more elated [than] when I really forget where I am. “
