Concerns over plans to redevelop Viper Room in West Hollywood – NBC Los Angeles
The redevelopment of the iconic Viper Room in West Hollywood has faced criticism from neighbors concerned about plans for the project.
Located along Sunset Boulevard, the proposed project would include an 11-story hotel with residential units and restaurants. The world-famous Viper Room, synonymous with West Hollywood, would be recreated as part of the development.
Local residents, however, believe the project is simply too big and believe the city simply doesn't have the space needed.
It's just a huge, gargantuan building lot in this small space, said Bjorn Johnson, a longtime West Hollywood resident.
Others are not opposed to the idea of redevelopment but fear that neighbors' opinions will not be heard.
We are not against development; we're not trying to stop the project, said Elyse Eisenberg, president of the West Hollywood Heights Association. We just want to get the developer to be more reasonable about the neighborhood's concerns.
One of the biggest concerns is the impact on traffic at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Larrabee Street. Other residents fear the project will be plagued by delays, as with the Melrose Triangle, the crater-like empty land still awaiting development and transformed into an eyesore in West Hollywood.
West Hollywood is becoming a ghost town of empty businesses because commercial property owners are demanding too much rent from tenants, and no one is able to pay it,” said resident Mark Lines. of West Hollywood “Even if the structure is built, there is a very good chance that it will remain half empty.”
Charles Essig, developer at Sunset Creek Development, says the project will include affordable housing and public green space to bring new life to ViperRoom and West Hollywood.
We have worked very hard over the past six years and redesigned the project three times to address community concerns, Essig said.
The West Hollywood Planning Commission will meet Thursday at 6:30 p.m. to listen to residents' concerns about the Viper Room redevelopment project.
