Academy Award-winning actor Louis Gossett Jr. died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, according to his death certificate.

Gossett, 87, first black man win a supporting actor Oscar for his role as Sgt. Emil Foley in the 1982 film An officer and a gentleman, died March 29 in Santa Monica, California.
He died of COPD, a lung disease, People reported. According to Centers for Disaster Control and Prevention, COPD refers to a group of diseases that cause airway blockage and breathing problems. The disease includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
TMZ was the first media outlet to report on Gossett's cause of death. The website, which claims to have obtained the actor's death certificate, adds that heart failure and atrial fibrillation contributed to his death.
Gossett is the second black man to win an Oscar. Sydney Poitier won the Best Actor award for his role in the 1963 film, Lily of the field.
Gossett was also known for his career-defining role in the groundbreaking 1977 television miniseries. Rootswhich earned him a Emmy Awards. He played the role of Fiddler, an older slave who teaches Kunta Kinte to speak English in the eight-part miniseries.
