The darkest year?
This year, only a handful of Hindi films such as Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, Baaghi 3, Shubh Mangal Zyaada Saavdhan and Malang have been released in theaters before the lockdown goes into effect. “With more recent expenses [Covid-19 related SOPs] when it reopens, we would need the help of the government. They can reduce the entertainment tax, GST rates and property taxes for now, ”says Manoj Desai, executive director of the G7 and Maratha Mandir theaters in Mumbai.

During the lockdown, many single-screen cinemas such as AVM Rajeswari and Maharani in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Shanthala in Mysore, Karnataka and Sapna in Thrissur, Kerala, among others, have closed shutters.
And experts say nearly 50% of single-screen theaters may struggle to stay afloat.
“The government should seriously consider giving a green light to the opening of movie theaters. It’s not like opening them up will lead to a sudden surge [Covid-19] Numbers. Either way, the cases are not declining at the moment, ”said Shibasish Sarkar, CEO of Reliance Entertainment Group.
