The Italian fashion design icon was 83 years old

Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli died Friday at his home in Florence, Italy, following an unspecified illness. He was 83 years old.

Cavalli's fashion house confirmed the news on Instagram, writing: “A life lived with love. It is with great sadness that today we say our last goodbyes to our founder Roberto Cavalli. From his humble beginnings in Florence, Roberto has managed to become a globally recognized name, loved and respected by all. Naturally talented and creative, Roberto believed that everyone could discover and nurture their inner artist. Roberto Cavalli's legacy will live on through his creativity, his love of nature and through his cherished family.

In the caption of the Instagram post, Fausto Puglisi, creative director of Roberto Cavalli, paid his own tribute.

“Dear Roberto, you may not be physically here with us anymore, but I know I will always feel your spirit with me,” Puglisi wrote. “It is the greatest honor of my career to work under your legacy and create for the brand you founded with such vision and style. Rest in peace, you will be missed and loved so much that your name will live on, a beacon of inspiration to others, and especially to me.

Sergio Azzolari, CEO of Roberto Cavalli, added: “The Roberto Cavalli Company shares its condolences for the loss of Mr. Cavalli’s family. His legacy remains a constant source of inspiration.

Cavalli presented his first collection in the 1970s in Saint-Tropez. However, his brand was largely confined to Europe until the 1990s, when he became one of the first designers to put Lycra in his jeans. His taste for prints and bright colors quickly earned him international fame. He was a frequent guest on many red carpets and was followed by a host of Hollywood stars.

Cavalli was born on November 15, 1940 in Florence. Survivors include six children and his partner Sandra Nilsson. He has already been married twice.
