Models in their 90s star at Minnesota Fashion Week
Models aged 60 to 90 walked the runway for MN Fashion Week.
MINNEAPOLIS With years of wisdom, older adults are often the best role models in life.
They can also be models, challenging fashion industry norms and walking for Fashion Week MN (FWMN). FWMN has put out a call for models aged 60 and over to walk in one of its spring shows, titled “I AM Fabulous.”
The oldest model was 90 years old, a spokesperson said.
“I think age depends on how you feel,” model Thomas Hill said. “I don’t feel like I’m 67 and I know I don’t look it.”
Before Hill was a model, he did other models' hair. He spent over a decade as a fashion designer before venturing into interior design.
Others have also embraced modeling as a new adventure.
“I think part of the best life is just continuing to live,” Tene Wells said.
Wells, 71, spent his youth running the Shoestring Playhouse, known for recruiting actors regardless of their race. She later led the nonprofit WomenVenture to help women achieve economic success, which at one point caught the attention of Oprah Winfrey on her talk show.
“Most people think you make the bucket list and then you die,” Wells said. “I think you make the to-do list and then you make another one.”
“Are you considering getting old?” asked KARE 11 Sunrise reporter Michelle Baik.
“I think it’s about acceptance,” she said. “But I think it's acceptance with a vision of what you want. So [with] two knees and a hip, and two spinal surgeries later…I just want to walk normally.”
These models are redefining beauty for themselves and others.
“It shows we’re still here,” Hill said. “We are here and we are fabulous.”
Fashion Week MN continues its spring season with events through Saturday, April 20.
