Flashes claim historic victory in dramatic fashion
DeKALB, ILL- Tim Orr capped a two-out ninth-inning rally with a grand slam and the Flashes outlasted Northern Illinois 9-8 in 10 innings to win the series and earn the 2,000th victory in program history.
Kent State found itself trailing 7-4 with two outs and no one in the ninth. The Flashes then embark on a comeback straight out of Hollywood. Lance MacDonald was on his last strike before hitting a double down the right field line. Ripken Reese was hit by a pitch and Josh Johnson worked a walk. Tim Orr then sent a 1-0 pitch in the opposite direction, over the left field wall for his second homer of the game and giving the Flashes an 8-7 lead.
The Huskies were able to tie the game in the ninth, sending the game into extra innings. In the 10th, Brody Williams drew a walk and went to second on a wild pitch. Dom Kibler then sent a single into right field, setting up Williams and giving Kent State the lead for good. Peyton Cariacoworked around a two-out single and got the decisive out to seal the victory.
Orr finished the game 2-for-5 with a game-high five points. Eight different Flashes scored a point on Sunday. Kent State sent four homers on Sunday, with Michael McNamara AndKyle Jackson join Tim Orr.
The win puts the Flashes at 19-18 overall and 10-8 in MAC play and 2,000 wins as a program, joining Central Michigan and Ohio in the MAC's 2K club. Kent State has a busy five-game week with a trip to Youngstown State on Tuesday, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
