Worcester Red Sox fall to Lehigh Valley IronPigs
ALLENTOWN On a 3-2 pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Cal Stevenson walked the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (13-7, 47-46) to a walk-off victory over the Worcester Red Sox (10-9, 45-49) Saturday night at Coca-Cola Park.
The IronPigs started scoring in the first inning when Kody Clemens hit an opposite-field home run over the left-field fence to give Lehigh Valley a 1-0 lead.
The WooSox responded by putting two runners on in the second inning. Nick Sogard walked to lead off the inning. Niko Kavadas hit a double to right to put runners on second and third base. With one out, Matthew Lugo hit an RBI single to left field to put the WooSox on the board.
Eddy Alvarez then bunted Kavadas to score and give Worcester the lead. In the bottom of the third inning, Darick Hall hit a home run to center field to tie the score at two.
But Worcester answered again in the fourth inning when Niko Kavadas hit a solo home run to right. Since the start of the second half (June 25), Kavadas is hitting .383 with eight extra-base hits and 13 RBIs in 14 games.
Lehigh Valley tied it again in the sixth on a Cody Roberts single that sent Vaughn Grissom on a rehab assignment. Grissom went 0-for-2, drawing two walks and stealing a base in four plate appearances as the WooSox's designated hitter.
In his 17th start of the season, Jason Alexander allowed two runs in five innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out five batters. Over his last seven appearances, Alexander has a 2.55 ERA.
It was the 10th time he pitched at least five innings this season.
The WooSox will close out their series with the IronPigs on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. Richard Fitts (5-4, 4.76 ERA) is scheduled to face David Buchanan (6-3, 5.03).
