Indonesia retakes Singapore's Natuna airspace
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) approved the proposal to support the Flight Information Region (FIR) of Singapore in Indonesia.
“Singapore formerly controlled the airspace above the Riau and Natuna Islands, at an altitude of 0 to 37,000 feet,” the minister remarked on Saturday (March 23).
Luhut said he received this report while recovering in Singapore on January 11, 2024.
Additionally, 60 days after the release of information regarding these changes, Indonesian airspace, which had previously been designated as a Singapore FIR, reverted entirely to an Indonesian FIR.
With the official implementation of the transfer of the Singapore FIR to the Indonesian FIR, Luhut said the government's air services policy will make Indonesia's airspace safer, more competitive and more attractive to the airline industry. civil aviation.
“We hope that management of Indonesian airspace that is safe, efficient, consistent with national interests and in line with international civil aviation service standards can be achieved,” he remarked.
Apart from the FIR agreement, he noted that the Defense Cooperation and Fugitive Extradition Agreement between Indonesia and Singapore has also been implemented.
“This is important, given that these are bilateral issues that have not been resolved between the two countries for a long time,” he stressed.
Luhut said the diplomatic approach of Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Long facilitated the conclusion of the deal.
However, he recalled that the agreement should not put aside national interests.
Based on President Joko Widodo's instructions, Luhut also participated in establishing good communication with Singapore's Minister of State Teo Che Hean.
