Imran Khan gets boost as Pakistani court orders key local polls

(Bloomberg) — Pakistan's top court ordered the country's election watchdog to hold elections in the crucial Punjab province on May 14, pushing back against government efforts to delay the vote and delivering a blow thumbs up to former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

A three-judge panel of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, responding to an appeal from Khan's Tehreek-e-Insaf party, overturned the Election Commission of Pakistan's earlier decision to delay the elections in the country's most populous province for October 8, Gohar Ali Khan, a party lawyer, said by telephone.

While Khan's party welcomed the verdict, Justice Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the order was disappointing and would only worsen the political crisis. Tarar insisted at a press conference that Justice Bandial should have constituted a larger panel of judges to hear the case.

The Punjab state legislature, then controlled by Khan's party, was dissolved on his instructions in January. The former cricket star has been pushing for new elections in the province in addition to his demand for early national elections, which he sees as a way for Pakistan to achieve political stability and help support its economy in trouble.

The Election Commission said holding elections in Punjab in April was not possible, citing a resurgence in terrorist attacks, a shortage of security personnel and an unprecedented economic crisis in Pakistan.

The court ruling is the latest headache for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as his government tries to convince the International Monetary Fund to revive its loan program and help Pakistan avoid a default.

Khan, who was ousted from power last April following a vote of confidence, remains a popular leader, with a recent poll showing his approval rating has soared.
