Indonesia urged to take advantage of bilateral relations with Iran to reduce tensions in Middle East
Jakarta, Beritasatu.com – Former Indonesian Ambassador to the United States Dino Patti Djalal has stressed the importance of bilateral relations between Indonesia and Iran as part of an effort to prevent the escalation of conflict in the Middle East. East.

Indonesia is known for not having formal diplomatic relations with Israel, so it cannot make similar requests bilaterally to Israel. Dino stressed that Indonesia must make more than just statements to reduce the conflict.
“Contact Tehran, find out about the situation and their views. We can then coordinate with the United States to find a common solution. All countries can of course provide statements, but statements alone are not enough, especially if they are only published by a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Dino added.
Last year, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) received a visit from Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi at Bogor Palace. During the visit, the two countries signed a series of agreements, including a preferential trade agreement. Government data shows that trade between Indonesia and Iran will reach $206.9 million throughout 2023.
In response to the attack, Indonesia issued a Foreign Ministry statement calling on all parties to exercise restraint and asking the UN Security Council to act immediately to quell the conflict.
Dino also warned that the UN Security Council may have difficulty reaching consensus. This council has five permanent members, namely the United States, China, Great Britain, Russia and France, all five with veto power. Recently, the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting at the request of Israel.
Dino said it would be difficult for the U.N. Security Council to reach consensus, citing the time it took the Council to pass resolutions related to the Gaza conflict due to the U.S. veto.
“The UN Security Council could face divisions between the United States, France, the United Kingdom and China and Russia. The possibility of the Council reaching an agreement on the Israel-Iran conflict is very weak,” Dino pointed out.
The UK, USA, France, China and Russia have different views and responses to this conflict. Britain has condemned Iranian attacks on Israel, calling them “relentless”.
The United States, known to be close to Israel, has called through President Joe Biden on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to think carefully and strategically about the risk of escalation. Biden also emphasized the United States' commitment to easing regional tensions and avoiding broader conflict.
French President Emmanuel Macron said Paris would do everything in its power to avoid further escalation. China said this latest attack was a result of the conflict in Gaza. Russia is known to maintain close relations with Iran.
