Is British politics full of scandals? – Channel 4 News
This week on The Political Fourcast, another scandal hits the Conservatives: MP Mark Menzies loses his post as whip as the Conservative Party investigates allegations he misused campaign funds. He allegedly made a call late at night asking for money to pay the “bad people”. He disputes the allegations and senior Conservative MPs are urging voters not to rush to judgment. As local and general elections approach, these allegations are likely to harm the ruling party.
But is today's story just another example in a long line of MPs from all parties flouting the rules?
Since 2019, there have been at least 10 cases of Conservative MPs being suspended or resigned over allegations of misconduct. Similarly, during the same period, at least four Labor MPs were accused of misconduct, as well as one from the SNP and one from Plaid Cymru.
This week we speak to SNP Deputy Leader in the Commons, Mhairi Black, who has announced she will stand down at the next election. And former Education Secretary Justine Greening, who had the Tory whip removed after opposing Boris Johnson on Brexit in 2019.
