According to Noah Barkin of the German Marshall Fund, who first reported on the dinner, Macron will try to convince the chancellor and will attend the meeting with Xi next week, along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Another likely dinner topic will be EU policy, including its defense and financing. Macron is pushing for so-called defense bonds, which would involve the joint issuance of debt at the European level to finance military investments.
Olaf Scholz has so far rejected this idea.
