Trump says Harris should not be allowed to run, repeating bizarre claim

At his first rally since President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race for the White House, Donald Trump did exactly what everyone expected him to do: The Republican spent much of the rally attacking Vice President Kamala Harris. However, the former president has tended to attack his new rival by calling her crazy. Trump, for example, called the likely Democratic nominee crazy.

But during his speech in North Carolina, one of the Republican candidates' lines of attack stood out:

Kamala Harris…shouldn't even be allowed to run for president, given what she's done. She's committing crimes.

Republican supporters naturally applauded this rhetoric.

There’s a certain irony in this: A jury recently convicted Trump of nearly three dozen felonies. If Harris shouldn’t even be allowed to run for president because she commits felonies, then I guess we should expect the former president to deliver a withdrawal speech of his own.

Also, insisting that the Democratic vice president is committing crimes would be less ridiculous if Trump had evidence that Harris is, you know, actually committing crimes.

But what particularly caught the attention was the Republican candidate's suggestion that his likely Democratic rival should not even be allowed to run for the White House. If that comment rang a bell, there's a good reason:

In October 2015, Trump said Hillary Clinton should not even be allowed to run for president. In February 2016, Trump said Ted Cruz should not be allowed to run for president. In March 2016, Trump said John Kasich should not have been allowed to run against him in a Republican primary. In October 2020, Trump said Joe Biden should not have been allowed to run for president. And in July 2024, Trump said Kamala Harris should not even be allowed to run for president.

Part of the problem here is that the Republican candidate is getting lazy, recycling tired insults, nicknames and attacks.

But equally remarkable is that Trump has long been interested in who should or should not be allowed to run against him and, in a remarkable coincidence, he consistently argues that those who stand in his way are or should be ineligible to cast American ballots.

Trump has already earned a reputation for being hostile to democracy. This isn't going to help him.
