Donald Trump's gains with black voters have been wiped out

Former President Donald Trump's gains with black voters have been eroded since Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race and Vice President Kamala Harris became the expected Democratic nominee, polls show.
Biden endorsed Harris shortly after announcing Sunday that he was ending his reelection campaign. The move comes after weeks of calls for him to step down after a disastrous debate performance against Trump, the Republican nominee, raised concerns about his ability to win in November and serve a second term.
Top Democrats quickly rallied around Harris, and by Monday night she had won the support of enough Democratic delegates to become her party's nominee, The Associated Press reported.

If nominated at the Democratic National Convention next month, Harris would be the first woman of color — she is of Black and South Asian descent — to lead a major party ticket.
Polls in recent months have shown Biden losing support among black voters, who were key to his victory in 2020. In 2020, 92% of black voters cast their ballots for Biden, while about 8% backed Trump.
Polls since Harris announced her candidacy suggest that black voters who were disenchanted with Biden could be invigorated by the prospect of a historic Harris presidency.
A CNN poll conducted July 22-23 of 1,631 registered voters who had already participated in CNN polls in April and June found that Harris had the support of 78% of black voters, while Trump had 15%. An earlier poll showed that 23% of black voters supported Trump, while 73% supported Biden.
Meanwhile, an ActiVote poll conducted between July 21 and 23 found that black voters overwhelmingly supported Harris: 90% said they supported Harris, while 10% supported Trump.
Asked for comment, Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt referred Newsweek to a memo from campaign pollster Tony Fabrizio about what he called the “Harris honeymoon.”
“The honeymoon will be a manifestation of the mainstream media coverage” Harris has received, he wrote. The coverage will be “largely positive and will certainly energize Democrats,” giving Harris an edge in polls ahead of the Aug. 19 Democratic National Convention.
Fabrizio said Democrats and the media “will try to present these polls as evidence that the race has changed. But the fundamentals of the race remain the same.”
The Harris campaign has been contacted by email for comment.
Thomas Gift, associate professor of political science and director of the Center for American Politics at University College London, in the United Kingdom, told Newsweek that the fact that black voters are “shifting away from Trump suggests that his hold on this demographic has always been tenuous.”
“The question is whether those losses are offset by increased support for Trump from other voters, particularly working-class white Americans, to whom Biden has appealed by emphasizing his working-class roots in Scranton.”
Costas Panagopoulos, a political science professor at Northeastern University, told Newsweek that “the rapid shift in support from Trump to Harris among black voters speaks volumes about the volatility of support for Trump among these voters.”
“Once they had a viable alternative that also shared their racial identity, they jumped ship to Trump almost instantly.”
Since announcing her candidacy, Harris has enjoyed widespread support from the Black community. About 90,000 Black women tuned into a video call for her campaign Sunday night, while an online “Black Men for Harris” event drew tens of thousands of people pledging to support Harris, according to the AP.
On Wednesday night, Harris addressed members of the historically Black Zeta Phi Beta sorority in Indianapolis and thanked them for their work in electing her vice president and Biden to the presidency.
“And now, in this moment, our nation needs your leadership again,” she said. “In this moment, I believe we face a choice between two different visions for our nation, one focused on the future, one focused on the past. And with your support, I am fighting for the future of our nation.”
Trump’s campaign has courted black voters, arguing that the former president’s prosecutions could make him more popular with black Americans because they can relate to being targeted by an unfair criminal justice system. But some polls suggest black voters are turning away from Trump after he became the first former U.S. president to be convicted of crimes earlier this year.
