China's Xi highlights benefits of cooperation with Slovakia during Fico visit, ET Auto
Chinese President Xi JinpingChina will strengthen bilateral cooperation with Slovakia in areas such as new energy, transportation and logistics as well as infrastructure construction, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Friday, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.
Xi told Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who is visiting China until November 5, that a new intergovernmental committee between the two countries was essential to strengthen cooperation in various areas, including water resources management.
The leader of the world's second-largest economy spoke of encouraging “powerful” Chinese companies to invest in Slovakia and invited Slovak companies to explore the Chinese market.
China also announced the evolution of its relations with the Central European country towards a strategic partnership and granted Slovak citizens 15 days visa-free entry into China.
Commenting on the crisis in Ukraine, with which Slovakia shares a border, Xi said China welcomed joint efforts to promote peace talks.
Under Fico, Slovakia has worked to build closer bilateral and economic ties and alliances with countries outside the European Union, including China, its largest trading partner outside the 27-state bloc, as well as than with Russia.
Before his trip, Fico called his visit “crucial” following the decision by the European Commission, which oversees EU trade policy, to impose tariffs on electric vehicles made in China.
Slovakia was one of five EU countries that opposed the tariffs, counting on Chinese investment to help it build an electric vehicle battery factory.
Chinese lithium battery maker Gotion High Tech and its Slovak partner InoBat have invested 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion) in the factory, as Slovakia's auto industry goes electric.
Slovakia, which produces Volkswagen models for export, is also wary of facing possible anti-customs measures after the bloc's decision on electric vehicles made in China. Beijing has hinted it will impose taxes on the bloc's big gasoline engines.
Xi reiterated China's position on EU tariffs, urging European institutions to adopt a “positive and pragmatic policy towards China” and avoid politicizing economic and trade issues.
Fico is expected to visit a factory operated by Gotion in eastern China. He will also attend the opening of the China International Import Expo in Shanghai.
