Mukbang videos made illegal in southern China’s Guangdong
Guangdong Province in southern China has banned live streamers from showing Mukbang or other types of binge drinking videos.
The recent move can be seen as an extension of China’s ongoing campaign against food waste and to promote frugality, announced in August.
In August, Chinese President Xi Jinping called food waste in China “shocking and painful” and urged officials and government bodies across the country to immediately end such behavior.
Authorities have said social platforms circulating binge eating videos should be tasked with monitoring and reviewing the content of cooking shows.
The trend towards Mukbang, a combination of the South Korean words “meokneun” (eating) and “bangsong” (broadcasting), originated in South Korea around 2010 on YouTube and has since taken off around the world.
In recent months, various social media platforms in China have pledged to restrict the distribution of videos in which participants consume excessive amounts of food in a short period of time.
Douyin, China’s largest short video social media platform, said it would punish users seen as wasting food on their shows. China’s Twitter-like platform Weibo has also pledged to restrict videos and live streaming involving food waste.
Competitive cooking shows have been around for some time on the television screens of some Western countries and have a legion of dedicated followers.
According to the UN, a third of the world’s food, about 1.3 billion tons is wasted each year. An estimated 820 million of the world’s 7.6 billion people, or one in nine, suffer from hunger.
