Number 9 Baseball Drops CWS Opener At Notre Dame
OMAHA, Neb. Number 9 Texas Baseball dropped the College World Series opener on Friday night at Notre Dame, 7-3 at Charles Schwab Field. The Longhorns (47-21) will now face number 5 Texas A&M in an elimination game at 1 p.m. on Sunday
Pete Hansen started and threw 4 1/3 innings, but was tagged for six runs on nine hits. Notre Dame scored points in four of the first five frames on Hansen.
Tristan Stevens threw well from the bullpen, hitting 4 2/3 innings and giving up only one run on two hits.
Dylan Campbell went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored to lead the Longhorns offensively. Douglas Hodo III and Eric Kennedy each had one hit and one RBI, while Murphy Stehly had scored one basehit and one run.
Notre Dame opened the score with a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Irish got another run in the third inning with an RBI groundout to make it 2-0.
Texas got one run back in the bottom of the third after Campbell walked and Trey Faltine a single to start the inning. Kennedy drove into the run with an RBI groundout to narrow the lead to 2-1.
Another Notre Dame-run gave up in the top of the fourth inning to give the Irish a 3-1 lead, but Hansen was able to limit the damage to just one run, leaving the bases loaded.
Notre Dame took a big lead in the fifth inning, driving Hansen out of the game and extending the lead to 6-1.
The Longhorns got a run in the fifth when Campbell singled, stole the second and scored on an RBI single by Hodo.
The Longhorns continued to chip in the sixth inning, as Stehly singled and scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-3. Unfortunately, that was the only goal for the Longhorns.
