Women's golf ties for the second time at W&M's Kingsmill Intercollegiate
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. The University of Pennsylvania women's golf team could not successfully defend its crown at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate on Tuesday, with Boston University scoring its lowest round of the week to bounce back and overtake the Quakers by one stroke in the final round.
The two-day, 54-hole event was played on the par-72 River Course at the Kingsmill Resort.
Penn entered Tuesday's final round down 10 strokes, shooting 311 as a team not far removed from Monday's two-round Quakers (308 and 309). Unfortunately, the Terriers were carded at 300 because no team shot better than 308 on Monday, finishing at 63 over par 927, which was one stroke better than Penn. Sacred Heart also had a strong Tuesday, with 301 as a team leading the Pioneers to tie the Quakers for second place.
Junior Natalie Cao and sophomores Julie Shin both finished the week tied for sixth in a field of 58 golfers, Cao shooting 76 on Tuesday and Shin shooting a 77 as both finished at 15 over par 231. Bridget O'Keefe shot a 78 on Tuesday to finish the week tied for 11th at 234 while a freshman Maggie Ni finished 13th out of 236 and classmate Madeleine Zang was tied for 26th with a three-round score of 242. Freshman Chelsea was in the field as an individual and shot her best round of the week to finish the event at 267.
Christy Chen of BU was the individual medalist, shooting a final-round 73 to end the week at 6 over par 222. That left her one stroke ahead of SHU's Chantal El Chaib and two ahead of Mary Grace Dunigan of tournament host William & Mary. .
