No. 1 Boston vs. No. 4 RIT
SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) The first of two NCAA college hockey regional games kicks off with No. 2 Boston University vs. Rochester Institute of Technology at 4 p.m. at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.
Boston University is the top-ranked team in the Sioux Falls region, which also includes RIT, Minnesota and Omaha. All four teams are competing for one spot in the NCAA Frozen Four. KELOLAND Sports will have live blog coverage and recaps of all three games online and on-air.
The games will be broadcast on ESPNU.
The Terriers (26-9-2) are five-time NCAA champions and played in last year's Frozen Four. Heading into the regional game in Sioux Falls, Boston head coach Jay Pandolfo said his team is happy to be here and is focused on playing its best hockey.
The margin for error is very small in these types of games, Pandolfo said. You can't beat yourself this time of year.
Boston is led by 17-year-old standout Macklin Celebrini, who has scored 31 goals and 28 assists. Celebrini is the youngest player in college hockey and is a top prospect in the 2024 NHL Draft.
He should be in his senior year of high school, Boston defenseman Case McCarthy said of Celebrini. The stats themselves show how great of a player he is.
This is the first-ever meeting between the two East Coast teams. RIT reached the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2016 and the Tigers are making their fourth appearance in the tournament since moving to Division I hockey in 2005.
They are a good hockey team, Pandolfo said. We've never seen these guys before. Were usually focused on how we were going to play.
RIT (27-10-2) has won seven straight games in the NCAA tournament and has the oldest roster in the tournament with 11 players age 23 or older.
RIT head coach Wayne Wilson said his team lost to Holy Cross in the conference tournament last year and that has served as motivation for his team this year.
We were on the big stage, Wilson said. We have to play with our identity.
The Tigers have six players who have scored 10 goals or more. Wilson said his team accomplished the difficult feat of winning both the regular season and conference tournament titles.
That's the hard thing about our league: Regardless of the type of regular season or for us, it was 26 regular season games; it is insignificant. You have to win your playoffs.
