BeachBows returns home with wins over Grand Canyon, Portland
HONOLULU The University of Hawai'i's No. 12 beach volleyball team started its final homestand of the season with a pair of wins Saturday at the Clarence TC Ching Complex. In its first home games in more than a month, the Rainbow Wahine defeated No. 19 Grand Canyon 3-2 before breezing past Portland 5-0.
UH's first game against GCU was a competitive affair that came down to the last court. The bottom half of the order all went to three sets, with the Lopes (11-13) winning two of three courts to take a one-point lead in the dual. UH needed to win on the top two flights to clinch the win and they just did that. In only their third match together, Kaylee Glagau And Pani Napoleon defeated Sarah Dickson and Katie Keefe 21-18, 21-17 to level the doubles 2-2. Jaime Santer And Alana Embry finally putting the match to bed and crushing any dashed hopes for GCU with a 21-17, 21-18 straight-set victory over Krista Rowan and Sophia Hladyniuk.
The back end of the doubleheader went much smoother for the BeachBows. UH defeated Portland (8-9), winning all five courts in straight sets. Riley Wagoner And Sydney Amiatu bounced back from a rare defeat earlier in the day to beat Valerie Bruk and Taylor Helle 21-9, 21-12 in a match that was mostly indicative of the other courts. UH moved to 5-0 all-time against Portland, completing its eighth sweep of the season.
The Rainbow Wahine will now play their final two home games of the season at Ching Courts on Sunday. UH will take on Chaminade at 3 p.m. before facing Grand Canyon in a rematch in a game televised on Spectrum Sports at 6:30 p.m. After the match, Sabrina Hardisty, Kaylee Glagau, Anna Maidment, Pani Napoleon, Jaime Santer And Riley Wagoner is honored during the Senior Night festivities.
